“I’m sorry there wasn’t better news.”

Josh snorted inelegantly. “Well... the numbers don’t really mean anything,” he said; he laughed quietly, the sound bitter and sarcastic. “God, who the fuck do they think we’re kidding? We’re just deluding ourselves.” He ran a tired hand over his face.

“Josh...” He reached his steady hand out to rest on Josh’s trembling shoulder. “You’ll pull through this.”

Josh looked at him with desperation plain in his bloodshot eyes. “Kenny, this thing’s tearing us apart.”

“I know,” Kenny whispered; and he remembered Josh’s shoulders slumping when Sam left without making eye contact. “I know.”
