Josh stood helplessly on the sidelines as Sam wrapped up his final weeks at the White House. Donna asked him if he wanted to throw a surprise party for Sam, he said no; she had looked shocked and even a little appalled. He couldn’t bring himself to explain he didn’t want Sam to go anywhere.

CJ and Abbey planned the party. Sam left in two days. Josh let himself slip aside once the main toasts had been given.

Sam found him not long after.

Josh looked at him wearily; “Why?”

Sam’s expression was hooded; "I'm just standing in the way."
